Why Mauritius?

The Republic of Mauritius is an island nation off the southeast coast of the African continent in the southwest Indian Ocean. The area of Mauritius is 2040 km2 and its capital city is Port Louis.

Mauritius became independent from the UK in 1968. It is a parliamentary republic and is a member of the United Nations, Southern African Development Community, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, the African Union, La Francophonie and the Commonwealth of Nations.

Being dependent on sugar production and textiles since its independence, Mauritius has since developed to a diversified economy with important pillars in financial services, business process outsourcing, and tourism and information technology. Mauritius is ranked as an upper-middle income economy by the World Bank. It has been ranked as the best governed country in all of Africa, five years in a row, finishing on top of the Ibrahim Index of African Governance and 36th in AT Kearney Global Services location index 2011. And according to the Democracy Index, Mauritius is the only African country with “full” democracy.

Mauritius has adopted the British constitutional and administrative system with an elected chamber for members of parliament and a President (who is the Head of State) elected from the parliament and not through universal suffrage. And it is politically and socially very stable where successive governments have provided their utmost support to local and international businesses. In turn this stability has reflected in a very Stable currency Vis a Vis the main currencies like EURO, USD and GBP

The main source of law in Mauritius remains British common law, with elements of France's Code Napoleon also being used, a legacy of pre-1810 French colonization. This has provided for a strong and international legal and regulatory framework. The influence of the british and French have resulted in the population being well versed in both English and French. If English is the official business language, french is the most spoken.

Since Independence, the successive governments have invested massively in Infrastructure, Telecommunications, education and logistics to make Mauritius one of the friendliest place to do business. As such it is no surprise that there are an existing international presence of over 35,000 financial services companies in Mauritius and over 12,000 jobs in BPO & KPO alone.
